West Cumbria Mines Research Group
preserving heritage for future generations

charity number: 1118458

WCMRG has for nearly twenty years, provided speakers to give talks to local groups on mining and local history, and has moved on from rather dry talks just about mining, to more generlised talks, with the emphasis on involving the audience in a more interactive way.

The current talks are heavily visually-orientated with Powerpoint presentation using our own and The Beacon's photographic collections. This mixes old black and white photographs of the past, with modern colour photographs derived from mine exploration.

Current subjects include:-

North Copeland - Distington across to Frizington, Arlecdon, Rowrah, Lamplugh
Central Copeland - mainly Cleator Moor and Egremont, but down to Gosforth
South Copeland - Millom across to the Ulpha Valley
West Copeland - mainly Whitehaven but including St Bees to Harrington
Mineshafts & Minecapping - a pictorial record of collapses and their treatment.

With thanks to the beacon for there use of photographs.

Talks can be booked by contacting Dave Banks by e-mail at
